International adoption

International adoption in Portugal is almost none existent according to a report by Social Services with four Portuguese children finding a home in another country and 12 foreign children being adopted within Portugal in the last year.

Isabel Pastor, the head of Social Security, said: “There are fewer children leaving the country because there are fewer candidates to adopt them.”

Many countries have restrictions on children who can be adopted from other countries, however, “there are many children who are eligible for international adoption who do not have a family waiting for them,” she said.
