International accordion gala

The Sociedade Recreativa of Barão de São Miguel, in the Vila do Bispo council, welcomes once again the International Accordion Gala on March 3 at 3pm.

The event will bring to the county some of the most acclaimed accordionists in the world.

They include world champion Pietro Adragna (Italy), Stadimir Uzonov (Bulgaria) and from Portugal Rodrigo Maurício, Jorge Alves, Eugénia Lima and Francisco Saboia.

This traditional event showcases the biggest names in the art of playing accordion and the audience will have the opportunity to hear one of the Algarve’s most distinctive and traditional musical instruments.

Folk music

An accordion, mainly used in folk music, is a portable wind instrument with a small keyboard and free metallic reeds that sound when air is forced past them by pleated bellows controlled by the player’s hands.

The instrument was patented in Paris in 1829 by Cyril Damian. During the first years of the 20th century, the accordion slowly gained importance throughout the world, including in Portugal, being enjoyed by the middle and middle-lower classes for its unique sound.
