Intelligent electricity meters ‘to be fully connected by 2020’

Regulatory authority ERSE has at last defined rules for the change-over from traditional electricity meters to ‘intelligent’ models that transmit consumption in realtime.

Say reports, intelligent meters have been being installed for years, ““though not all of them are connected to intelligent networks”.

In other words, the ‘beauty’ of never again having to pay an overly high estimated reading is lost.

Now ERSE has defined “a package of minimum services” to be implemented gradually until the end of 2020.

The incentives within the package are that consumers will pay no costs.

Tabloid Correio da Manhã says EDP currently has “around 2.3 million intelligent meters installed, though only 1.8 million are connected to intelligent networks”.

EDP’s plans are for 80% of clients to have these ‘smart meters by 2023.

Said a source for the company: “Depending on the incentives, we could increase substitution”.
