Ins and outs at Portimonense

The Algarveans are continuing their efforts to strengthen the newly-promoted team with long-standing relations with FC Porto set to play a major role once more.

Last season’s on-loan players Luís Mata, Fidelis Irhene and Gleison, who have all returned north, may be succeeded by highly-rated 20-year-old central defender Chidozie should the Nigerian’s move to Nantes fall through. Mata could also be on his way back as Lumor’s recent performances for the Ghanaian national team have attracted increasing interest from foreign clubs.

One player certain to start upfront alongside Pires for Portimonense come August is Rui Costa. The 21-year-old, who scored 14 goals for Varzim during the last campaign, signed on during the January transfer window under the proviso that he remain at his then club until summer.

Another option in attack is Alfredo who has ended his loan spell with Brazilian second division side Paysandu but has yet to demonstrate his potential to coach Vítor Oliveira.

Other reinforcements currently strongly linked with the Algarveans are Arouca’s Nuno Coelho and Nacional’s Rui Correia while Moreirense’s Tiago Almeida as well as Académica’s Makonda are further possibilities.

Meanwhile, Portimonense’s latest pre-season friendly to be confirmed is a game with FC Porto at the Stadium of the Algarve on July 27.
