Inmates cost €572,000 a day

Each of the 14,268 inmates in Portuguese prisons costs taxpayers €40.10 a day, with the total daily amount being €572,000.

This includes expenses with prison guards and administrative staff, food and canteen services, and other daily expenses.

Up to August 15, the prison services authority (DGRSP) recorded a total of 14,268 prisoners, 18% under preventive detention and the remainder convicted inmates serving sentences; 94.3% were men and 18.6% foreign.

The prisons’ occupation rate stood at a staggering 166.8%.

On December 31, 2012, prisons in Portugal totalled 13,614 inmates.
