BLOOD RED Shoes are performing at Santiago Alquimista, Lisbon on November 20.

The name of the band was inspired by a Ginger Rogers / Fred Astaire movie in which Roger’s character had been dancing so much that her white shoes became tainted with blood.

The English duo comprises Laura-Mary Carter from Surrey and Steven Ansell from West Sussex, both of who had previously been in other bands, Cat on Form and Lady Muck respectively.

They have performed over 400 live shows and released eight singles since creating the band in 2005. The group signed to the V2 recording company in 2007, which released two of their singles, It’s Getting Boring By the Sea and I Wish I Was Someone Better before V2 was bought out by the Universal Music Group, who released their debut album Box of Secrets in April this year.

Unfortunately music from the album was leaked online, leading to downloads by private torrent trackers. Although Laura-Mary and Steven said they have no issue with file sharing and downloading free music, the group were disappointed that their debut album had become available outside of their control and without the intended artwork and lyric booklet.

The band claims to have been influenced by many US-based punk and rock bands like Nirvana, Babes in Toyland, Q and Not U, Pixies, Fugazi and Sonic Youth. Although they are frequently likened to The White Stripes due to the boy/girl drums and guitar set up, the group vehemently denies being anything like their competitors – and have commented on their strong dislike of the other band.

The band frequently distances itself from other English guitar music bands currently on the scene, considering itself to be a punk band, in ethos and attitude, if not in their immediate musical style. Having previously studied art, Laura-Mary designs all of the sleeve art, posters and merchandising and the duo like to ensure that ticket prices are kept low, merchandise is made on non-sweatshop fabrics and are sold at a reasonable price.
