ONLY HALF of all Portuguese families pay IRS tax according to the latest statistics from the Administração Fiscal, tax authorities.

Last week the Administração Fiscal said that between 2004 and 2005, of the 4.2 million who declared their income, 52 per cent (2,217,419) didn’t pay any actual taxes.

After discounts and deductions allowed under the law only 48 per cent of Portuguese families paid liquid taxes to the state.

Between 2004 and 2005 the number of families that made an IRS declaration rose by 1.2 per cent, while families actually paying taxes through IRS fell by six per cent.
