Inaugural birdwatching festival success

More than 600 enthusiasts took part in the first Birdwatching Festival of Sagres, with twitchers from both Portugal and overseas taking part in this new event held over the first weekend in October.

Attendance at the event “surpassed” the expectations of the organisers, leading them to announce that the festival would be repeated in 2011 over the first weekend of October.

Over the three days of the festival this year, hundreds of people attended the various workshops and events which included field trips, lectures and boat tours.

All events were oversubscribed and there was even a need to put on extra activities to accommodate the increased demand.

A spokesman for the event said: “Participants came from all across Portugal as well as from Spain, Britain and Germany and this influx to the area resulted in an increased demand for accommodation and restaurants.”
