PORTUGUESE immigration authorities have fined 24 Lisbon-based companies for employing illegal immigrants.
The Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiros (SEF) also said it had detained two foreigners following a clampdown in the Greater Lisbon area and they would be expelled from the country.
Inspections were carried out in January at bars and restaurants, leading to fines totalling 64,000 euros for the owners of 24 establishments. The proprietors concerned will also have to pay for the repatriation of the illegal immigrants.
The inspections revealed 48 illegal immigrants. Of these, 46 were notified to leave the country within 20 days, while another two had already been given instructions to leave Portugal.
