Illegal slaughter

An undercover operation by the Portuguese food safety agency (ASAE) resulted in the arrest of seven people for the illegal slaughtering of livestock in the Messines area last week.

Nearly 300 sheep and goats were seized by ASAE as well as slaughter equipment and vehicles with a total value of 18,785 euros.

The arrests were made after over a month of surveillance by ASAE with the results pointing to animals being slaughtered illegally for public consumption. Those arrested are set to appear in Silves court for trial.
