Illegal old people’s home closed after residents found “dirty, hungry and sick”

An illegal old people’s home in Alfena, Valongo where pensioners lived in “precarious and degrading conditions” was closed down by GNR police on Monday (May 16).

“Malnutrition and lack of hygiene” were two of the main problems.

According to Correio da Manhã newspaper, one of the pensioners was found with scabies while others had to sleep in the home’s basement and garage.

What’s worse is that family members said they had no clue of what was going on.

When they visited, the residents were apparently “cleaned up” and taken to the living room to not raise suspicion.

“The situation was degrading. They were always hungry and dirty. I had to leave because I couldn’t see so many people hungry,” a former worker of the home told CM.
