A routine inspection of a Spanish-plated truck at Lisbon’s cargo terminal last week led to a ton of bivalves being confiscated by ASAE food safety officers.
The ‘Japanese clams’, valued a €2,180, were on their way to be sold in Spain inside 48 bags with no labels. The authorities found the driver lacked any official documents regarding the origin of the bivalves.
After getting the “all clear” from the veterinary authorities, the molluscs were returned to the sea.
ASAE assured it would continue to clamp down on the illegal trading of bivalves, as “bivalve fishing is currently forbidden in many areas of the country”.
Say cheese!
Meantime, ASAE inspectors also targeted cheese producers at a factory in Mirandela for lacking the “necessary licensing”.
Around 7,000 goat cheeses, worth around €60,000, were confiscated by the food safety authority and the factory was ordered to suspend operations.
