Illegal basement creche obliged children to go to lavatory in buckets

An illegal basement creche in Amadora, outside Lisbon, obliged children to go to the lavatory in buckets as the only usable toilet was in a street-level former hair salon which would have ‘given the game away’.

Police raided the creche this week, discovering 16 children from the ages of 3 months to 10 years old.

The youngsters had foam mattresses to sleep on, and conditions generally were described as “degrading”.

Parents are said to have paid €60 a month to leave their children in the care of a woman who told reporters she will go on caring for children – albeit in a different location now – as the parents need her service.
