IKEA massive Loulé complex starts taking shape

Furniture giant IKEA has started building its mega shopping complex near Loulé, due to open in 2016.

The Swedish company began clearing land in January, but this is the first sign of construction work.

It is also the only information given in a short press release, which promises further information at a press conference on September 2.

For now, all that is known is that the €200 million project includes an IKEA store, a shopping centre and a gigantic retail fashion outlet.

The IKEA store is earmarked to open next year, with the rest planned for the 85,000sqm complex due to follow in 2017.

The retail outlet is set to involve 110 stores running “permanent discounts of up to 70%” on “big fashion and lifestyle brands” (click here IKEA Loulé welcomes gigantic fashion superstore).

Meantime, shop owners’ association ACRAL is still going all out to halt construction of the complex (click here Relentless retailers lodge new injunction against IKEA Loulé).
