More than 27,000 people visited the first Portuguese IKEA store, in Alfragide, Lisbon, on its first day of opening. The Swedish superstore franchise offers all types of household items, and their cheap and cheerful furniture is world famous. To further tempt shoppers, customers are being offered the chance of signing up for the IKEA credit card, with three months interest free credit.
Hundreds of people spent the night outside the shop, waiting for it to open its doors. These hardy shoppers were rewarded with three hundred euros to spend in the store. Joaquim Raposo, the President of Lisbon Câmara, expressed his delight at the new shop, saying it would breathe new life, and money, into the Alfragide area.
