IGTM coming to Algarve

One of Europe’s leading golf fairs, the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), will be held in the Algarve next year.

Organised by Reed Travel Exhibitions, the event attracts more than 600 golf tourism suppliers from around 55 countries and is aimed at suppliers, buyers and media involved in the sport.

Over three days, golf businesses can meet, through a system of pre-scheduled appointments, and take the time to network through the many opportunities that the fair presents.

Peter Grimst, director of the organisers, says the Algarve has built up a prestigious reputation within the golfing world, offering a number of courses designed by famous players such as Sir Henry Cotton, Arnold Palmer, Sir Nick Faldo and Severiano Ballesteros.

“The quality of golf courses and resorts are exceptional, and we will have all the necessary logistics to organise a truly outstanding event,” he said.

A 2011 report produced by the IGTM on golf industry trends shows that the UK is the largest market in Europe for golfing today.

“Some 70% of golfers surveyed stated that their friends’ recommendation was either ‘important’ or ‘very important’ when deciding where to book an international golf trip,” said Peter Grimst.

The report also said that Portugal currently ranks second as the most popular international destination for a golf holiday, after Spain.

President of the Associação de Turismo do Algarve (Algarve Tourism Association), António Pina, said: “Portugal, and in particular the Algarve, is proud to host the IGTM. This event is a unique opportunity for the region to promote golf as a destination of excellence and to mark its position as the scene of major international events.”

The IGTM will take place at the Tivoli Marina Hotel in Vilamoura between November 12 and 15.
