The ICNF (institute for nature and forestry conservation) has embargoed a section of land-levelling works that have been undertaken by citrus company Frusoal between Cacela-Velha and Manta Rota, within the (supposedly-protected) Ria Formosa natural park. Civic movement Tavira em Transição blew the whistle on this destruction which has already uprooted numerous protected trees and plant species. Indeed, the group claims Frusoal continued its destruction in spite of the embargo. ICNF personnel have since been ‘on the ground’, telling reporters it’s a matter now of Frusoal either “restoring the land to its previous natural situation” or stumping up for stiff fines…
