Iceland to open second Algarve store in Portimão this month

After the success of the Albufeira store, a new Iceland supermarket is opening at the Portimão Retail Center on Tuesday, June 20 at 10am.

Open seven days a week between 10am and 10pm, it will stock over 1,000 British-branded products from both the Iceland and Waitrose chains.

“We’re very excited, everything’s brand new, the store is looking great and it will even have its own café,” Lorraine Elphinstone from Iceland Overseas Supermarkets told the Resident.

It will be located in a section of the Portimão Retail Center previously occupied by a Minipreço supermarket and will be “very similar in terms of size and product choice” to the other Iceland store in Guia (Albufeira).

Hopes are that it will bring the frozen food chain closer to the western Algarve community.

“There are lots of expats in the area, as well as a great community of foreigners and Portuguese,” she said.

In fact, the number of Portuguese shopping at Iceland is growing.

“At first, they found it a bit strange as it is mostly British products, but now we have a solid number of Portuguese clients,” Elphinstone added.

Iceland will be the only supermarket at the retail centre in Portimão, which also features stores such as Worten, Sports Zone, Calçado Guimarães, C&A, Casa, Kiwoko and Cash Express as well as a Burger King restaurant.
