Husband who stabbed dentist wife to death in her Lisbon clinic handed 21-year prison sentence

A 40-year-old Brazilian nightclub bouncer who stabbed his wife 19 times in her dentist office in Lisbon last May has been sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Marcos Camargo confessed in court that he couldn’t deal with the fact that his wife wanted to divorce him.

Armed with a knife, he entered the clinic the couple managed on the busy Rua Augusta and killed 28-year-old Luana Camargo, in full view of staff and patients.

Jornal de Notícias reports that in his last court hearing the man said he was “sorry” and just wanted the conviction process to end.

Correio da Manhã reported last year how Marcos Camargo was so keen “to make sure his wife was dead” that he called the main number on his mobile to check for certain.

A few hours before the crime, his wife had posted a message on Instagram saying: “I am not afraid of change. Good things go so that better things can follow.”

The young woman is reported to have walked out of the couple’s seven-year relationship the night before, saying she wanted a divorce.

Camargo and his lawyer, Eugénia Ferreira, are now said to be discussing whether or not they will appeal against the sentence. His lawyer even admitted: “We expected the sentence to be harsher.”
