An 82-year-old shell fisherman with a history of domestic violence turned himself in last night (June 8) after his 52-year-old wife was found stabbed to death in their home in Olhão. The man had reportedly been on the run for hours, a PSP police source told Notícias ao Minuto.
The woman’s body was found shortly before 7.30pm by the couple’s 15-year-old son and a friend who had to climb into the apartment through a window after she failed to open the door for them or answer her phone.
TVI reports the woman had told neighbours, friends and family that she was afraid of her husband, whom she had lived with for over two decades and had two children, aged 15 and five.
“She said he was getting worse, was threatening her all the time and she couldn’t take it anymore. He had already broken her teeth once,” a neighbour told TVI.
“She couldn’t go to the café, she couldn’t go anywhere without him following her. He threatened to kill her,” said another neighbour.
The victim’s brother claims the man once threatened to “take her out to the field and kill her but she escaped and went to the PSP police station to file a complaint. We spoke to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Olhão, but they did nothing,” he lamented.
The case is now being investigated by the PJ police.
