Demands for prime minister’s resignation
BUDAPEST SAW the largest rally yet by Hungarians demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyursany for lying to the nation. A crowd of between 20,000 and 50,000 people filled the square outside the Hungarian parliament building last week. The prime minister admitted, in a leaked private speech, that his government had lied in order to be re-elected this year. The protesters wore white to symbolise the need for truth and peace. On the first day of protests demonstrators stormed the state television building, set cars alight and since then protests have spread to several provincial towns.
