Hundreds gather outside closed Portimão school as teacher strike continues

Around 200 people – including teachers, school staff and students – gathered this Friday morning outside Portimão’s Teixeira Gomes secondary school as part of the ongoing teachers strike which has kept the school closed for three days straight.

The strike has seen several schools closing across the Algarve, as many teachers refuse to continue giving classes while their demands remain unmet.

Among their demands are better wages and career progression.

“We are here fighting for schools with more quality,” a descriptive geometry teacher told CMTV at the Portimão protest.

“I’ve been a teacher for years, and I can see that we are all lacking motivation. And it is not good to lack motivation, because we pass that concern on to our students,” the teacher added.

The national strike started on December 9 and is due to continue until at least January 14.
