Hundreds compete at Vilamoura Carnival sailing competition

Hundreds of sailors from all over Europe took part in the 48th International Carnaval Sailing Regatta which was held in Vilamoura between February 26 and 28.

Organised by the International Vilamoura Marina Club (CIMAV), the event is described as the “largest of its kind in Portugal”.

Sailors competed in several different classes – Optimist (youth class), ILCA (4, 6 and 8), 420, Snipe and Dart 18.

The lack of wind on the first day of the competition prevented any regattas from taking place, but the event resumed on the following day.

CIMAV president Isolete Correia said she was proud to organise this event yet again “and with so many participants.

“CIMAV is very important to the region and to nautical activity. This club was born almost simultaneously with Vilamoura Marina,” added Correia.

Here’s the list of winners:

Optimist: Sergio Mancera (juvenis); Lourenço Teixeira (infantis); Maria Frazão (iniciados)
ILCA: Hannelien Borghijs (ILCA 4); João Pontes (ILCA 6); Sebastian Keeping (ILCA 7)
420: Sebastian Beckmann and Miguel Carbo
Snipe: Henrique Brites and Francisco Maia
