Humane hunting in the Algarve

An informal lunch is to be held this Sunday (October 31) to promote the sport of mounted drag hunting in the Algarve.

Anyone interested in becoming involved in the sport is invited to the lunch at 1pm to be held at the New Forest Lodge Carriage Driving and Riding Centre located 10 kilometres north of Lagos.

David Fry from the lodge told the Algarve Resident: “Drag hunting is in no way connected to live animal hunting.  We would follow a scent trail laid by a human “fox” and are looking for runners, riders and carriage drivers, with or without their own mounts, as well as dog handlers and dogs with a good nose.”

He added: “We purely wish to revive and enjoy the old fox hunting traditions in a more humane and environmentally responsible manner and we have no intention of hunting live animals.”

Those who would like to take part need to contact the organisers. Alternatively if interested participants are unable to attend, the organisers are able to keep people up to date with developments.
