More than 500 people gathered on the Praia da Rocha beach on August 13 to raise money and to show their support in the fight against cancer.

The event was organised by the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA) and was being held for the second consecutive year in the popular tourist destination near Portimão.

Organisers had hoped to attract 1,000 participants to take part in the event but the lower turnout on the day was put down to many people preferring to go to the beach later in the day rather than in the morning when the event took place.

Maria de Lurdes Pereira from the AOA said: “We would like to thank everyone who took part in the initiative and who helped us to make it happen this year.

“People’s bad habit of going to the beach in the afternoon was without a doubt a factor in us not reaching our goal of 1,000 participants but we were still impressed with the 516 people who turned out to join us.”
