Huge losses

Bad weather has led to an estimated loss of 12 million euros for the Algarve’s agricultural industry, according to Uniprofrutal, the region’s fruit and vegetable producers union.

The citrus fruit industry is the most affected in the region, with predicted losses of 10 million euros this year as the strong winds have caused up to 30 per cent (around 50,000 tonnes) of the fruit to be lost.

According to Eduardo Ângelo, president of Uniprofrutal, more than 90 per cent of producers in the region have been affected.
