Huddersfield Town won promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Wembley against Reading on Monday. The Championship play-off final was billed as the richest game in world football and victory guarantees that the ‘Terriers’ will earn a cool €200 million in the process.
German manager David Wagner, 45, brought his players to the Algarve for a training camp the morning after beating Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off semi-final.
Wagner also invited the players’ families along and he believed those four days in the Algarve ensured that his team were in the right frame for the final.
“It was a very good experience when we took the whole group, including families, to a camp that allowed us to train in the morning and afternoon, but also spend time together,” he added.
It is 45 years since Huddersfield were last in the top flight of English football and only Bradford City (77 years) and Cardiff City (52 years) of the clubs promoted in the Premier League era will have waited longer for a return to the highest level.
