April is the month of the broad bean, or Fava in Portuguese, at the Caliços Municipal Market in Albufeira, with the vegetable being sold each Tuesday for €1.50 a kilo.
Broad beans are a valuable vegetarian source of protein in the Mediterranean diet. This vegetable is widely cultivated in Portugal and much enjoyed by the Portuguese.
The Caliços Municipal Market will be holding a show cooking event on April 11 at 10am where visitors will be able to learn how to prepare many delicious recipes using the broad bean as the main ingredient. Recipes will include Algarvian-style broad beans, broad beans with spare ribs and chouriço and broad bean purée.
