SWAPPING OF houses and apartments for holidays is increasingly popular, with more than 20,000 members having joined a UK internet-based scheme over the past 11 years.
This success has now led to the creation of a Portuguese-language version, Trocacasa, of the English HomeExchange website started in 1997.
HomeExchange is an alternative holiday accommodation website, where two families agree to swap their homes anywhere in the world.
Members register their property with photographs and information by paying a yearly fee through
the website.
It took HomeExchange nine years to reach 10,000 members but then grew to 20,000 between 2006 and 2007, with membership increasing last year alone by 88 per cent.
