Half of the Algarve’s hotel units have closed for the winter.
A study by the Hotels Association in Portugal (AHP) revealed that 48% of hotels in the Algarve have opted to close for a period of between one month and three months this winter because of the economic crisis and the lack of tourists in the low season.
However, the trend is spreading to the rest of Portugal, namely the Alentejo and central regions. The AHP study concluded that 16% of hotels nationwide decided to close doors for at least one month this winter.
