Vila Real de Santo António’s historical Hotel Guadiana has been put forward by the Câmara to become a property of municipal interest.
The status, if approved by the institute that manages property of architectural and archaeological interest in the country (Igespar), will grant Hotel Guadiana special protection by the municipality.
The hotel was built between 1918 and 1921 by Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi and its architecture mixes the classic and Art Nouveau styles.
The hotel, which has been shut since 2007 following financial problems, has fallen into a state of disrepair and is “in desperate need of refurbishment work”, says the Câmara.
