Selling delicious Christmas cakes in a bid to raise money for charity is the goal of an initiative launched for the second year by Portugal’s 12 hotel and tourism schools.
Entitled ‘O Melhor Bolo-Rei do Mundo’ (The Best Bolo-Rei in the World), the project will see over 3,000 students baking thousands of Portugal’s festive fruit Bolo-Rei cakes.
They can be ordered from any of the 12 schools, with proceeds going to various charities.
Last year, over 2,200 cakes were sold which benefitted 50 social solidarity institutions and 60 families. Organisers hope the number will grow this year.
The recipe for the ‘Best Bolo-Rei in the World’ was created by Chef Inácio Belinda from Lisbon’s hotel and tourism school and features an ingredient which makes it “unique” – black beer.
