The Algarve is the number one choice for Portuguese couples this weekend, with hotel reservations going through the roof.
It has really helped that Valentine’s Day this year falls on a Friday, says Elidérico Viegas, president of the Algarve’s hoteliers association AHETA.
“Throughout these last couple of years, more and more people have been celebrating Valentine’s Day, and the fact that it takes place just before a weekend is an added incentive for people to come to the Algarve for an extra-long weekend,” he said.
Viegas stressed that cheap prices during the low-season have also helped the picture – with some hotels reporting a 50% increase in business. The weather too has been a bonus, as it is nothing like as bad as it has been elsewhere in the country.
In fact, Viegas said he is still hopeful for even more “last minute” bookings.
