HOTEL OWNERS in the Algarve are outraged at the government’s plans to dramatically increase the price of electricity from the second quarter of this year.
The Associação dos Hotéis e Empreendimentos Turísticos do Algarve (AHETA), the region’s hotels and resorts association, has issued a statement claiming that the increases are “offensive, unrealistic and irresponsible” and will put many companies at risk.
According to AHETA, electricity consumption represents the second largest cost for hotels and resorts, after staff costs, and such “brutal” price increases will have serious consequences for the sector.
Hotels and resorts, which are consumers of média tensão and baixa tensão especial (medium tension and special low tension – terms which relate to the voltage supplied), are faced with price increases ranging from 10 to 14 per cent.
