FOUR WELL known women artists are exhibiting their work at the Lagos Slave Market, during April. The common theme is traditional Portuguese life and the unspoilt countryside and coastline of the western Algarve.
Sue Rubita is renowned, for her magical watercolours. Her paintings are figurative and detailed and yet ethereal and intangible. Subjects include gypsies, market sellers, donkeys and Lagos scenes.
Gabriela Clark, an Oxford University graduate in Fine Art, is a water colourist and specialist in painting ‘en plein air’, without photographic aid. Her pictures of seascapes, fishing boats, old farmhouses, combine-harvesters and donkey carts are all painted on site. They reflect the Algarvean light and are spontaneous and free. Gabriela has been teaching watercolours for the last seven years, near Burgau. A permanent collection of her work is on display at the new private hospital, in Lagos.
Jill Parkinson paints in watercolours, acrylic and pastel. Her work depicts Algarve landscape and seascapes and is vibrant and richly atmospheric. She has been exhibiting annually in the UK since 1996 and in Lagos for the last three years.
Liz Lawson Pickles is a water colour artist who paints varied subjects, but is particularly known for painting different species of birds, such as the hoopoe, bee-eater and stork. Cards printed from original paintings are on sale.
The exhibition captures the essence of the Algarve and pays homage to nature and the old traditions and way of life, so fast disappearing in Portugal. Open from 10am until 7pm at Lagos Slave Market from April 1 until 30.
