Dog lovers can now leave their faithful friends for the doggie holiday of a lifetime at a new rural hotel for dogs in São Lourenço do Palmeiral, near Alcantarilha.
The director of Happy Dog, Afonso Horta, opened what he believes to be the first canine centre of its kind in the region, where up to 15 dogs can board while their owners are away.
Four-legged guests at the hotel can benefit from dog training, daily brushing and pampering, two healthy meals per day and exercise in the open air.
The service is ideally suited to foreign residents in the Algarve who travel to home countries without their pets and to Portuguese tourists who find their holiday hotel cannot accept dogs.
Specialist training programmes will include a three-month course in daily behaviour, where the trainee will learn to socialise with other dogs and walk on a lead.
A training programme is also available for dogs with aggression or problematic behaviour.
