Hotel donates bedding to charity

Hundreds of items of bedding have been donated by the five-star Le Meridien Penina Golf and Resort near Portimão to four charities across the Algarve.

Antónina Oliveira, director of human resources at the Le Meridian Penina, told the Algarve Resident: “The hotel bought new bedding and it was decided that some of the stock that was in storage was not needed and so we donated it to those who need it most.”

The hotel donated 300 blankets, 300 sheets plus pillow cases, 75 bed covers and 40 pillows, which were divided between the Pirilampos children’s home in Albufeira and Lar Bom Samaritano children’s home in Alvor, as well as a home for the disabled in Paderne and an emergency housing unit in Espiche run by NECI, a Luz-based school that provides care for mentally and physically handicapped children.

Welsh artist David Haines, who helped to transport the donated items to the institutions, said: “It’s great news. We hope that other hotels will be encouraged to contact us when they undergo refurbishment as the children’s homes desperately need new furniture.”

Meanwhile, David Haines and Portuguese artist Amanda Deca also helped to raise 1,400 euros from an art exhibition, which was donated to NECI.
