Aljezur town hall has invested around €13,000 to avoid the temporary closure of the youth hostel (Pousada da Juventude) at Arrifana beach during the low season.
This investment has allowed the hostel to remain open during the winter months and prevented several workers from being laid-off.
Mayor José Amarelinho believes that keeping the hostel open is “a major asset”, particularly as the municipality is developing a strategy for surf tourism.
The câmara now awaits the government’s decision on the funding and management of Portugal’s financially-troubled youth hostels network.
