The southern region syndicate overseeing hospitality warns it has become aware of recurrent situations in which workers are suddenly left high and dry, only to find their contracts are not valid. A case in point is a restaurant in Lisbon which closed “from one day to the next”, after its owner, a French investor, suddenly thought better of the venture. His 11 staff then discovered their employment contracts were not legal. The business premises are on now being advertised in various estate agents. The French investor is not responding to journalists’ inquiries. The syndicate’s advice: if you cannot be sure your contract is legal, get it checked by the competent entities.
