Hospital Santa Maria without emergency surgeries

Hospital Santa Maria – one of Lisbon’s principal hospitals – is currently incapable of performing emergency surgeries. The 10 heads of various specialities who resigned last month (click here) were thought to have been persuaded to ‘return’. But today Jorge Roque da Cunha, secretary general of SIM, the independent syndicate of doctors, explains that they haven’t. “Right now there is no emergency surgery service” at the hospital, he tells SIC noticias. The resigning doctors continue to contend that working conditions have deteriorated to such a low point that they cannot continue.
