A citizens’ demonstration to demand “more health professionals and better conditions” at the Algarve’s hospitals and health units this summer is taking place in front of Portimão Hospital at 5pm this Saturday (July 1).
It is organised by the users’ commission of the SNS national health service, which warns that all the problems that the region’s public health services are known for tend to get even worse with the huge influx of summer tourists.
The commission says that the state’s “lack of investment in health” has led to issues in emergencies rooms, specialty appointments and surgeries, and even the measures it has taken to hire more nurses and doctors have been lacklustre.
In Portimão, citizens claim problems continue to exist and have only become worse in recent months.
