The only surprises surrounding last Saturday’s King George at Ascot concerned the fact that Doyen ended up odds against, and that punters latched on to Vallee Enchantee, who finished down the field. Frankie Dettori had my selection, Doyen, on a tight rein a furlong out and it was only a matter of seconds before the favourite quickened past the field in a few strides to record the Italian’s 2001st victory by an easy three lengths. American-trained Hard Buck finished second and his handler Kenny McPeek said: “The winner is one of the most impressive horses I have ever set eyes on.”
