Horror in Carvoeiro as van ploughs into holidaymakers’ car

A young holidaymaker is dead and another is fighting for her life after a violent crash in Carvoeiro on Tuesday which also claimed three other victims.
The tragedy happened around 3.30pm when the car full of young women, all in their mid-20s and of French nationality, pulled out of the CEPSA fuel station, on their way to Faro airport.
According to eyewitness reports, a van collided violently with the car. Another car, empty and parked further down the road, was caught up in the impact and sent hurtling into a ditch.
Police are now investigating, but it is believed that the violence of the crash killed the 24-year-old instantly, while her injured friends all had to be cut out of the wreckage by firemen. The road was cut off to traffic after the accident and remained off-limits until early evening.
According to news reports, the van driver escaped injury but went into shock straight afterwards.
A spokesperson for Portimão Hospital said one of the victims is being treated there, two have been released from hospital, while the worst injured has been airlifted to Lisbon’s São José Hospital – a centre for multiple trauma injuries.
The French Embassy has confirmed to the Resident that it is in contact with the victims’ families.
