Horrific accident kills two on Abrantes building site

Two building workers were crushed to death when a massive cement roof collapsed on top of them in Abrantes on Monday evening. The men, aged 35 and 50, were working on a site due to open as the town’s new health centre. As the labour conditions authority now investigates, it appears the men were on the first floor when the ceiling above them simply gave way.

The older of the two was still alive when he was dragged from the debris, but he died of his injuries in hospital. His younger colleague was killed outright. Eye-witnesses have been given psychological support.

According to Observador website, the €1.359 million project was due to be completed by the end of the year.

The last “visit to the site” took place in May, and was attended by numerous local dignitaries; including local mayor Maria do Céu Albuquerque and the vice president of the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo health authority.
