Honest cabbie returns thousands

A Muslim taxi driver who spent Christmas Eve driving many kilometres to find an elderly woman who left thousands of dollars in his taxi has refused any reward.

Mohammad Asaduzzaman, 28, travelled nearly 80km to return more than 21,000 US dollars (14,400 euros) to a forgetful Italian grandmother.

Police had told the 72-year old woman not to get her hopes up that she would be reunited with her money, which was the travelling fund for her and six relatives, as well as passports and jewellery.

While a lesser man might have been tempted to keep the riches, Mohammad Asaduzzaman took to the road to return the fortune using the address found in the lady’s wallet.

After returning the money, Mohammad Asaduzzaman said: “When I was five years old, my mother told me, ‘Be honest, work hard and you will raise your station’.”
