Homes destroyed by forest fires to be rebuilt

Seven homesteads destroyed by the widespread fires last summer in the region of São Brás de Alportel are now being rebuilt, and work is expected to start also on 11 more houses in the area engulfed by the flames.

The reconstruction will be carried out by four local builders who signed contracts this week with the local authority in the tiny village of Parises in the São Brás de Alportel district.

The local mayor António Eusébio said that as a result of the fires last July, families were left homeless and struggling to overcome problems caused by the catastrophe and maintain their livelihoods.

He stressed the importance, therefore, of implementing, without further delay, the policy of social solidarity created by the Government.

Apart from São Brás de Alportel, seven houses were gutted by the fires in the Tavira region where a recuperation programme is set to begin.

The cost of rebuilding the seven homes in São Brás de Alportel is around €235,000 while the global value of the total reconstruction plan for the two regions has reached almost €500,000.
