Getting older is not easy. Whether due to aging or illness, many people end up requiring care which cannot always be provided by friends or family members alone.
This is where Home Care Algarve comes in. Founded in 2021 by Beverley Rogers, the company strives to set itself apart by going above and beyond for its clients. Whether they simply need help going shopping or paying bills or require full-fledged nursing services or medical care, Home Care Algarve is there 24/7 for its clients.
“For us, it’s like becoming a member of the family, but in a professional capacity,” Beverley says.
Coming from a family which lived on the grounds of a care centre outside of London, Beverley spent her childhood surrounded by people with illnesses or disabilities. Her sister is handicapped and her grandfather, who lived with her family, had multiple sclerosis, meaning she had to deal with these kinds of issues from a very early age.
However, her life initially took a different path as a trained dancer in the entertainment industry which brought her to the Algarve in 1989. She later moved into other areas such as public relations and villa management before beginning to work for home care companies in the Algarve.
Eventually, Beverley decided to start her own company with the goal of improving upon some of the issues that she pinpointed while working for other companies.
“Here at Home Care Algarve, we are there 24/7 for our clients and their families. There is always someone available to help, no matter the day or time,” Beverley said.
Covering the entire Algarve, the company aims to ensure that its clients can live with “respect, dignity and independence” in their own homes.
As Beverley points out, working in home care is “definitely vocational”. Thus, the Home Care Algarve team – which includes 11 direct employees as well as a team of between 35 and 40 independent workers – is hand-picked to ensure a top-level service.
Perhaps the biggest endorsement of the company’s work has come from Tina Merritt, who was so impressed with the way Home Care Algarve cared for her mother at the end of her life, that she decided to leave her full-time job of four years and actually join the company.
“They did such an amazing job that I wanted to come work for them,” says Tina, who just joined the team under two months ago and is now working on the accounting and process side of things.
“The service provided by Home Care Algarve was quite different from what I had experienced with other companies, plus they are competitively-priced,” Tina adds.
It is Home Care’s commitment to do everything it can to make sure its clients are looked after in every way that Tina says sets it apart.
“When my mother had her heart attack, she was in the hospital one minute and the next she was being discharged with the doctors saying there was nothing more they could do. It’s in these situations where you immediately think, ‘what am I going to do?’. ‘How do I get her home?’. In the UK, we have a lot of hospices and palliative care is more developed. The situation in Portugal is quite different,” Tina explains.
Home Care Algarve’s know-how can make these experiences much easier, helping and guiding family members who might never have been in these situations before.
While Beverley is well-aware that Home Care Algarve is a business and, like any business, it needs to make money, she says “that’s not what it is about”.
“For us, it’s really about the people,” she says, adding that her clients’ well-being and happiness take precedence over the rest.
