A four-year-old boy left alone at home in an apartment block in Porto while his mother was out working had to be rescued by firemen in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Concerned firemen broke into the apartment after they were alerted by neighbours who had heard the child crying.
They found the little boy “naked from the waist up, frightened and extremely hungry”.
In the absence of relatives, he was taken to a temporary care home. The newspaper said that the child’s mother had left her son with her boyfriend, who had then gone out.
A decision on whether he would remain in care now lay with the court system.
