Holidaymaker killed by tour boat in Carvoeiro

A 53-year-old swimmer from Belarus was killed in a horrific accident with a tour boat in Carvoeiro, on Tuesday.

According to reports, the woman was literally mown down by the boat in front of her horrified husband, also swimming in the water nearby.

Rescued by a lifeboat and taken ashore, the woman’s death was declared by INEM emergency workers.

The accident happened at Praia do Paraíso – an unsupervised beach with no lifeguards.

Talking to reporters yesterday afternoon, Portimão ports captain said swimmers have to be aware of the large number of tour boats operating along the coast right now, and the boats themselves have to be on the look-out for people in the water.

Maritime police and PJ judicial police are investigating.

Meantime, a Spanish holidaymaker had to be airlifted from Lagos’ beauty spot Ponta da Piedade on Monday after falling during an attempted climb down one of the cliff faces.

Thought to have a broken leg, she was flown by helicopter to Faro hospital.
