A holiday excursion to Carvoeiro ended in tragedy this week when a 65-year-old member of the group drowned off Carvoeiro beach.
Called to the scene on Wednesday morning, authorities worked hard to revive the man, to no avail.
He had apparently gone for an early morning swim. The beach, like all the Algarve’s beaches in October, was without lifeguard support.
The man’s body was spotted by other holidaymakers on the same trip, all staying at Hotel Carvoeiro Sol.
The trip, organised by INATEL, involved Portuguese nationals.
The dead man is understood to have been resident in Penafiel.
